From desert to forest: rare plants and a Soviet-era greenhouse in Yerevan.
The Yerevan Botanical Garden is one of the greenest corners of the city. It was founded in 1935 on 80 hectares of semi-desert, and today its shaded paths wind through trees from across the world and a collection of Armenia’s rare native plants.
At its heart is a Soviet-era greenhouse, built in the 1940s. It once held more than a thousand tropical and subtropical species. Many were lost during Armenia’s energy crisis in the 1990s, when the greenhouse went without heat, but around 300 species are still growing under the old glass roof.
On this walk, your host takes you through the garden at a slow pace. Look for endangered plants found only in this region, step inside the greenhouse to see the plants that lived through those winters, and spend a quiet moment by the pond, where goldfish swim beneath the reflection of the glass roof.
Before you leave, you’ll make your own herbarium page: a fallen leaf from the garden, pressed and labeled with its Latin and Armenian names, to take home.
All entry tickets are included. No botanical knowledge needed, just comfortable shoes.
